Nightmare Express

Come take a ride on the Stringtown Nightmare Express ! !

The Stringtown Railroad will again be turned into a haunted train ride, complete with ghosts, goblins, spiders, bats, skeletons, dragons, and more. Like last Halloween, there will be movies, music, lots of scares, lots of candy, and lots of fun! New this year, we have added dinosaurs, a swamp, a big red dragon, and many more surprises. To add to the fun, please come dressed in your Halloween costume, even if you come on a night other than Halloween.

Cost:
FREE as always! If you would like to donate, there will be a donation box at the exit where you can donate to the Primary Children's Hospital and the Lindon Care Center.

Tips for Parents with Small Children:
5 pm to 6 pm is scare-free time for younger visitors and the faint of heart. The real haunting begins at sunset. Stroller parking is available at the entrance and at the barn (new this year). You will be able to take a stroller through the line up to the barn, so bring a stroller to help hold the small kids if you come when there are long lines.

Tips for Avoiding Long Lines:
No reservations are needed. Just come and get in line. However, we expect to have over 10,000 and up to 12,000 guests right the Nightmare Express this year. As a result, wait times will vary from 10 minutes all the way up to 2 hours. The busiest nights will be Friday, Saturday, and Halloween night. Come on an earlier day if you can. If you want to come early when it's less scary, line up at 4:45 pm to avoid the rush that comes at 5:00 pm. If you come at 5:30 or later, you may not get on the train until after dark, when it gets scary. If you want to ride at dark, come at 6:15 pm. You will arrive before sunset, but it will be dark before you get on the train. The long lines start after dark.

More About the Stringtown Nightmare Express

The Stringtown Nightmare Express started in 2006, and we have run every year since. In 2006, our first year, we had 900 guests ride the train. In 2007, after adding a second train, over 3400 guests were able to ride the train. In 2008, over 3900 guests swallowed thier fears and rode the Nightmare Express. In 2009, over 6000 people rode on the Nightmare Express. Last year, in 2010, we set another new record with 9,250 riders on the Nightmare Express.

It takes over 200 volunteers to create and run the Nightmare Express. Most of these volunteers are cast members, and play characters such as Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant, Dracula and his wife, Sally (from The Nightmare Before Christmas), a scarecrow, a warewolf, Harry Potter, several pirates, several princesses, a headless horsemen, and even a horse. There are also, of course, an entourage of scarers scattered about the Nightmare Express, usually hidden slealthily amoung the other props.

In order to make the Nightmare Express run smoothly, there are over 30 staff members whose job it is to run the logistical operations fo the Nightmare Express. These staff members include three train engineers, three train conductors (safety personell), three train loaders, three queue attentands, three theater attendants, two candy distributors, one meal coordinator, and one babysitter.

Long before the Nightmare Express ever begins, many volunteers go to work to build the Nightmare Express world and create all the effets that go into it. Then, during the Nightmare Express, they work behind the scenes to make sure all aspects of the Nightmare Express continue to function as planned. These volunteers include tunnel builders, decorators, prop builders, painters, mechanics, track fixers, sound technicians, lighting techinicians, animation technicians, costume designers, and more.

All of the Nightmare Express cast members and workers are volunteers, and each participate in this event simply for the fun of it. We are always looking for more volunteers to help improve the Nightmare Express, so if you are interested in helping with the Nightmare Express, please contact us.
