This Halloween, the Stringtown Railroad will again be turned into a railroad spook alley, complete with ghosts, goblins, spiders, bats, skeletons, graveyards, dragons, ringwraiths, Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory, and Dracula's castle. Like last Halloween, there will be movies, music, popcorn, lots of scares, and lots of fun!

To add to the fun, please come dressed in your Halloween costume, even if you come on a night other than Halloween.

Reservations:
We will not be making reservations for the Nightmare Express. However, lines usually only average about 10 to 15 minutes. Since we cannot predict how many people will come, we recommend you come early to avoid long lines. Also, Friday night and Saturday night (Halloween night) will be the busiest nights, so we recommend you come on an earlier day if you can.

Children:
This spook alley is designed to be fun for children of all ages. We have stayed away from the blood and gore when decorating our spook alley. However, it can still be scary for younger children. As a result, during the daylight hours, which is 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, the scarers that you usually see in tunnels and behind trees and fences will be kept to a minimum and toned way down. Also, because it is still daylight hours, most children are able to ride the Nightmare Express without getting too scared.

More About the Stringtown Nightmare Express

If you build it, they will come...
This will be our fourth year running the Stringtown Nightmare Express. In 2006, our first year, we had just under 1000 guests ride the train. In 2007, after adding a second train, over 3400 guests were able to ride the train. In 2008, over 3900 guests swallowed thier fears and rode the Nightmare Express. Last year, in 2009, over 6000 people rode on the Nightmare Express.

Cast Members
It takes over 120 volunteers to create and run the Nightmare Express. Most of these volunteers are cast members, and play characters such as Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant, Dracula and his wife, Sally (from The Nightmare Before Christmas), a scarecrow, a warewolf, Harry Potter, several pirates, a princess, a ringwraith, and even a horse. There are also, of course, an entourage of scarers scattered about the Nightmare Express, usually hidden slealthily amoung the other props.

Operation Staff
In order to make the Nightmare Express run smoothly, there are over 30 staff members whose job it is to run the logistical operations fo the Nightmare Express. These staff members include three train engineers, three train conductors (safety personell), three train loaders, three queue attentands, two popcorn poppers, three theater attendants, two candy distributors, one meal coordinator, and one babysitter.

Support Staff
Long before the Nightmare Express ever begins, many volunteers go to work to build the Nightmare Express world and create all the effets that go into it. Then, during the Nightmare Express, they work behind the scenes to make sure all aspects of the Nightmare Express continue to function as planned. These volunteers include tunnel builders, decorators, prop builders, painters, mechanics, track fixers, sound technicians, lighting techinicians, animation technicians, costume designers, and more.

Nightmare Express Volunteers
All of the Nightmare Express cast members and workers are volunteers, and each participate in this event simply for the fun of it. We are always looking for more volunteers to help improve the Nightmare Express, so if you are interested in helping with the Nightmare Express, please contact us.

Stringtown Nightmare Express Video Archives

Stringtown Nightmare Express at night:
This video was filmed at 8:30 pm when it was completely dark outside and the scarers were out in full force. It was filmed with a night vision camera to show all the details that otherwise wouldn't be visible to the naked eye. Most of the scareres that appear to be standing in plain sight are in fact completely hidden in the darkness, just waiting to jump out and scare you.

Stringtown Nightmare Express during daylight:
This video was filmed at 6:00 pm when it was still light outside. Before sunset, the Nightmare Express is geared more for families with small children. There are only a few scarers out, and the scaring is toned way down. This video shows what the ride is like before sunset, when no one is jumping out trying to scare you.
